Permanent lights vs traditional string lights
Short answer
Permanent systems win on effort, safety and year-round use; string lights win on upfront cost and on being movable. The real difference is that one is a repeating job and the other is a fitting you stop thinking about.
Where do string lights still win?
On day one cost, and on portability. If you are renting, if you move often, or if you want a different look every year, a box of lights is a perfectly rational choice and we are not going to pretend otherwise. They are also the only option if the feature you want to light is not attached to the building.
What does the cost comparison actually look like?
The shapes differ more than the totals. A permanent system is a single larger number and then effectively nothing; string lights are a small repeating number that never stops, plus the labour if you hire it out. Which one comes out ahead depends on your building and how long you stay, which is why we quote rather than publish a table that would be wrong for most readers.
Do they look different?
Yes, and it is mostly about the line. A permanent track produces an even, continuous edge because the spacing is fixed and the channel is straight. Hand-hung strings sag slightly between clips, which some people like — it reads as traditional — and others do not.

Can I keep using my old lights as well?
Nothing stops you. Plenty of people run a permanent roofline and still put something in the yard.
Do permanent lights use more electricity?
They are LED and dimmable, so a run typically draws considerably less than an equivalent length of traditional bulbs.
Which looks more traditional?
Warm white on a permanent system reads as classic. If you specifically want the uneven, hand-hung look, string lights do that better.
Is one safer?
The permanent system removes the annual trip up a ladder, which is the main risk in seasonal lighting.
